By the time it was over, 2014 was the warmest vintage on record, but surprisingly one with characteristics that, counter to the relatively high temperatures, provided qualities for balance and verve to accompany richness and depth in the wines. Those characteristics included an early start, a generous crop (carrying more fruit slowed down sugar development and acid depletion). The 2014 Astra is drawn from five barrels in the southeast facing blocks at Luminous Hills, and exclusively from the 667 and 115 clones. The 667 on upper elevation Jory volcanic soil delivers more ethereal nuanced qualities, while the 115 from the lower elevation sedimentary soil provides darker fruit underpinnings and spicier notes. The 2014 Astra is a wine with dramatic aromatics and expression.
