Nebbiolo wines from the Piedmont region of Italy are amongst the greatest wines in the world. It seems a natural habitat for this somewhat elusive varietal, particularly in the two most famous appellations of Piedmont for this varietal, Barolo and Barbaresco, where this grape reaches its pinnacle. While the new world will never produce something exactly like those wines, a cool corner of the Coyote Canyon Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills of the Columbia Valley in Washington, has something that hints of the promise for this grape in our backyard. While still supported by firm tannins, and the tarry earthy notes characteristic of the varietal, this wine is on the delicate side, showing off some rose and cherry notes, all supported by velvety texture.
