2010 Chatte d'Avignon Viognier & Roussanne Columbia Valley Oregon
The 2010 Viognier & Roussanne blend is from the same vineyard, Rattlesnake Road, in Arlington on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, as previous releases. As always, this site gives up a very rich and broad expression through these classic Rhone varietals - tropical/floral notes from the Viognier, accompanied by structure, stone fruits, and ginger spiciness from the Roussanne. The big difference with this year's version is that it is actually more Roussanne (52%) than Viognier (48%). We considered making a separate Roussanne as we've done in the past, but the blend was at it's very best with the inclusion of all the Roussanne. Still a wonderful accompaniment to a wide array of foods, from delicate shellfish or oysters to hearty meat dishes, or spicy foods.

2009 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills Crawford Beck Vineyard
This single vineyard Chardonnay from the Eola-Amity Hills expresses a clear sense of place from 14-year old vines planted on Saum volcanic soils. Farmed meticulously by owners David and Jeanne Beck, this Chardonnay was cropped at 2.25 tons per acre to achieve balance and depth of character with the full expression of Chardonnay that is possible in Oregon when utilizing Dijon clones (in this case 76). 2009 was a warmer vintage resulting in a big, fully expressive, but balanced wine.

2010 Ice Princess Viognier Sweet Wine
The Ice Princess Viognier Sweet Wine is made from the same fruit we use in our Viognier & Roussanne blend. The fruit is taken straight from the vineyard to cold storage where it is frozen for two weeks, after which it is immediately pressed very slowly over the course of several days, producing a mouth-filling, intensely flavorful, aromatic and lengthy dessert wine.

2010 Chatte d'Avignon
Grenache / Syrah / Mourvedre
Columbia Valley Washington
Sourced from vineyards along the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge in the Columbia Valley AVA, this wine is inspired by the great red wines of the Rhône region of France. The Grenache provides elegance and penetrating fruit, coupled with the meaty depth of the Syrah, and brooding inky dark leathery fruit of the Mourvedre. No new oak is used with any of the varietals (although a fair number of once used barrels are employed with the Syrah).

2010 Chatte d'Avignon Syrah
Columbia Valley Washington
A four-barrel selection that highlights the meaty, earthy character of this varietal as it is expressed in a region so similar to the Rhone valley with its heat, wind, gravelly, sandy soil and moderating influence of the river. Syrah, unlike Grenache (and of course, Pinot noir) has a lot of inherent color. That means something here, reflecting a darker denser character, but not without the structure and acidity needed for a balanced wine that plays well with food and develops over time, but without sacrificing near-term enjoyability.

2010 Chatte d'Avignon Mourvedre
Columbia Valley Washington
In the Grenache / Syrah / Mourvedre blend, the Mourvedre is responsible for that extra layer that provides depth. Here on its own, it is a concentrated expression of the characteristics of this varietal most often seen in the southern regions of France: brooding, inky dark fruit, hints of tobacco, leather and cracked pepper. This is a far world from the finesse and ethereal qualities we seek in our Pinot noirs – Mourvedre is all about exploring the darker side of old world style wines

2010 Chateau Figareaux Cabernet Franc Columbia Valley Oregon
This Cabernet Franc marks the beginning of our Bordeaux varietal program, which will include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec on the red side, and Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for the whites. This is a return to our roots and the wines we made in California at the start of this venture. This Cabernet Franc from the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge is the perfect starting point for these wines with its highly distinctive varietal expression of spice, palate coating texture, and deep, layered fruit.

2009 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
This 2009 Pinot Noir is a blend that incorporates the broad expression of five very distinct vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills, Yamhill-Carlton District, and Dundee Hills. Soils range from the diverse set of volcanic and sedimentary soils each of these AVAs are known for. In addition a broad selection of Pinot Noir clones are utilized to achieve a broad palette of aromas, textures and flavors, along with a small amount of whole cluster fermented fruit to add to the layers of complexity. 2009 was a warmer than average vintage, but this wine retains balance and vibrancy along with the elegance, complexity and expression of place that we cherish in our Oregon Pinot noirs

2009 Pinot Noir Crawford Beck Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills
A cooler site among the many we source from, the warmer 2009 vintage teased out a large generous expression from the volcanic Saum soils on the Crawford Beck Vineyard. As always, both red and dark fruit characteristics show through, but in a plush, expansive package. A wine with appeal in its youth, but also one that will reward with some aging.

2010 Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard Chehalem Mountains
This is a prized old vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains (formerly part of Jacob-Hart). Owner Todd Hansen (Longplay Wine) is another who gives the utmost attention and care to the vineyard (as you know, where all great wine begins). This blend is a co-ferment of some of the vineyards oldest and best blocks of Wadensvil, Pommard and Mariafeld (aka clone 23). Grown on volcanic jory soil, these lots combine to make a wine of tremendous purity, complexity and finesse.

2010 Pinot Noir Armstrong Vineyard Ribbon Ridge
We are absolutely thrilled to be one of a very few outstanding producers to be making wine from this small Ribbon Ridge vineyard, very lovingly overseen by owners Doug and Michelle Ackerman. This vineyard performed exceptionally well in 2010, particularly in that it displayed a great deal of the characteristics I prize for whole cluster fermentation. This single vineyard designate is a combination of 50% Pommard and 50% 777, and a whopping 67% whole cluster fermentation. As Ribbon Ridge wines often are, this is a big broad shouldered wine, but still with the elegance that you have come to expect from Seven of Hearts wines.

2009 Pinot Noir Special Reserve Willamette Valley
This blend highlights the highly diverse characteristics of four of the five vineyards we worked with in 2009, including fruit from the Yamhill-Carlton, Dundee Hills, and Eola-Amity Hills AVAs. The Special Reserve is our attempt at making the most complete, complex, layered, textured wine that we can produce, drawing on the very best of the fine vineyards we source from.

2011 Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton AURA
The 2011 vintage was distinctly cool and long, both of which are ideal for cool climate varietals such as Pinot noir, when it is handled right. And this is especially true for Rosé, so with these favorable conditions we decided to make our first Rosé of Pinot from the Luminous Hills vineyard. We’ve given this wine the special name Aura because, like the Lux and Astra, it is a distinct expression of the Luminous Hills vineyard drawn from designated portions of the vineyard, in this case from a direct press of the Pommard and 777 blocks, coupled with a saignée (bleed) off the lots from the same sections of the vineyard. The result is a Rosé with unparalleled richness, texture, and depth for a rosé, and one that is even worthy of aging.

2010 Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton
2010 may be the finest year yet for Luminous Hills. While our yields were down dramatically (hence only the regular and the Lux, but no Astra in 2010), the quality and precise expression from the different blocks was remarkable. In fact, with the absence of the Astra, along with the high quality of some of the other vineyards we started working with in 2010 (Armstrong and Lia's), more components of Luminous Hills were available to this blend than has been the case in the past (when more was needed for the Seven of Hearts Willamette Valley blend). As a result, the 2010 includes all four Pinot noir clones planted at Luminous Hills: Pommard, 115, 667, and 777. It's the broadest and clearest expression yet of the big picture story that Luminous Hills has to say.

2010 Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton LUX
As in the past vintages, the 2010 Lux is exclusively Pommard and 777, that special, distinctive combination, dominated by the broad, deep dark fruited notes from the Pommard on sedimentary soil, coupled with the intense brighter, redder fruits of the 777 on the upper elevation volcanic Jory soil. The difference this year is that, based on the success of this combination determined by blending trials before bottling in prior years, this year the two were co-fermented, bringing together, integrating, and elevating the wine, providing more complexity in the process. Different vintage, different wine as always, but very clearly Lux.
